"Annie's Street"

A wee fun painting which is a newer  version of an older one i did. It is very enjoyable for me to sit and work on these little villages, and imagine living there.

A young lady in one of my art classes asked me where the stores were as she viewed one of my city scenes that was hanging on the wall in my studio. She wondered where the people would buy their candy and ice cream. She was absolutely right and was most pleased when i showed her this one and another I did, complete with stores. Her smile was reward enough.

My two cows got into the group show by the way. They are with the herd just now, grazing. I'm happy for them.

This is 10" X 14". Transparent watercolor on my fave, Arches 300 lb. cold pressed paper.

  1. Ross, I adore this!
Its so fun and bright, just lovely. This is what it feels like life should be like everywhere, all polished up bright - and cheerful :)
When you come over to view my champagne glasses, bring this with you, eh? :) :)

  2. Hehe! That would be such fun Pat. Wish we could use those champagne glasses in front of one of the little shops watching all the bright folks wander by. Now i have an idea! I must include some champagne glasses along with shops and flowers in my next village. There must be a street musician too, and a music box man with the little monkey at his side. Even a vendor selling his potions from the back of a gypsy wagon. I can see it all now.

  3. So can I see it. You'll have to call it "Heaven is.." because the bright, polished, joyful look to this kind of scene puts me in mind of heaven :) ,

  4. What fun it would be to visit your village. Are those stars in the sky gingerbread men? The houses remind me of the brightly coloured houses in the villages of PEI!

    1. Christiane, pick your house. They are free here in Brightsville. You just choose the one you like and live there happily ever after. Pat is bringing her fabulous champagne glasses painting and we can sit on the curb watching all the bright folks saunter by. I don't think there is any crime here either. Now i must pay you a visit......

    1. Thank you Susanne. I've been wondering to myself if these pieces are overworked or not. Sometimes I work with watercolor as one would work with oil or acrylic. I love to do this but get caught up in the right and wrong of traditional watercolor. Your comments are greatly appreciated. It makes me want to paint another village! Smile! Thank for stopping by.

  9. So great to see another little village Ross. so inviting and offers a place to run away to in my head. Love that luminous yellow! whatever pigment that is, it's stunning, and hard to get with watercolour. Whatever it is y9ou're doing, run with it!

    1. Hi Gena. I do have these runaway places in my head. The luminous yellow could be one of three. For the yellow house on the shady side of the street i used Cad Yellow light. The other yellows are Hansa Yellow Light and New Gamboge. I lay all my shadows down first with a purple mix of Cobalt and Perm. Rose. Then i start adding color. Thanks so much for the comment.

  11. Back in your element Ross? Love the shaft of light. You amaze me as just when I think THIS is your forte you go on and paint something entirely off the chart and it's as good as your last subject...

    1. So nice to see you Barbara. The gallery owner said i paint like six people. I should focus more. But i love to do different things, the villages, the animals, the people. The people now are my new love. I hope to do more like the waitress. I'm out about town with my camera always. Hope you are well.

    1. Hello Nancy. So nice to see you here. Thank you also for your confidence. One never knows when entering these things. It all depends so much on the judges and what they are looking for. Yes, the villages are never far away from my thoughts. They are such fun to do and each one leads to another and another. My wife suggested i put a cemetery in one but not sure how that would lend itself to "whimsical". Smile! Perhaps a Tomstone kind of painting with western streets and buildings. Yes, i think that would do just fine.
