"Mali"

This is Mali. She is a recent commission from a lady who wanted to give Mali's owner, her sister, a special gift for Christmas. I very much enjoyed painting this beautiful pup and had a real a sense of her spirit as we worked. She is most likely a gentle sweet girl, I believe. When doing a dog commission, I like to paint the eyes first.
This way, Mali could participate in the process and keep me company as we worked.
I love my job. :)
This is watercolour on Arches 300lb. CP paper. 19" X 27".

  1. She is so elegant, Ross! You have such a beautiful way of both simplifying and enhancing the portrait [if that makes sense] I love the painting!

    1. Awesome! Thank you Polly. I do get attached to these little dogs. When i paint them i get a good feel for the animal and have a hard time seeing them go.

  4. Ross! so good to see you... Honestly I have lost some of my addresses and contacts, and how strange that just 2 days ago I went onto Google to find your site. Well I spelled your name Lymen...ok ok... not good.
Your painting is terrific, you have that special talent for animals... and omg! how I love that picture of Jiminy... the eyes, the tongue... and that bow tie.!
Just adorable.... Have a wonderful Holiday, what ever that may be, but in my world it's Merry Christmas. Barbra Joan

    1. What a blessing you are Barbara. In my world it is totally "Merry Christmas". Thank you to for looking me up and visiting. Your comments are appreciated greatly for sure. So glad you love Jiminy Cricket. He is a special boy who had a tough start to life too but is not living in grand style with plenty of hugs and cuddles. Such a delight these little guys. Hope you are doing well and have a beautiful Christmas. :)

    1. Thank you Catharina. The collar on the original photograph was not very clear and there was a lot of string for some reason on the collar. I had to take a bit of license with it and made the collar and the heart with a bit of ribbon just to add to the painting. I am glad you liked it! :)

  6. Nice Ross, capturing a white and black dog in watercolour takes some thinking.

    1. Thank you Lorraine. At one time i recall white subjects scaring the pants off me. These do take a lot of thought and a comparable amount of patience but i love doing them now and find white to be a lot of fun.
